According to the World Bank, in addition to the current small number of major regional trunk roads linking deep-sea ports to economic hinterlands, comprising no more than 10,000 kilometres, “etween 60,000 and 100,000 kilometres of roads are required to provide intracontinental connectivity” in Africa. With an average of 204 kilometres of roads per 1,000 square kilometres of which only one quarter are paved, the density of national roads lags far behind the world average of 944 kilometres per 1,000 square kilometres, of which more than half are paved. While there has undoubtedly been progress, the challenges remain immense. Over the last 15 years, however, the road sector in Africa is the one where most progress has been made in both institutional and financing terms, in particular with the creation of road agencies and road funds financed, in many countries, from fuel levies, so that 80 per cent of the main road network in Africa is now deemed to be in either good or fair condition. In Africa, as anywhere else, passengers and freight travel are, for the most part, “intermodal”, involving road, rail, shipping and even air transport.

This growth could have been even greater if the countries concerned had had appropriate transport infrastructure in place. Many African economies have experienced significant growth in recent years.
